A "prehistorical-fiction" novel about a boy prodigy in a primitive caveman society. First he reduces the dislocation of his own finger, then works out how to "set bones" for others who’re injured. Like Jean Auel's Ayla, he discovers other primitive technologies, including trapping, smoking meat, and the domestication of a wolf. His mastery of these skills gradually elevates his previously despised and downtrodden position in their society—until he becomes highly respected and admired. And, falls in love with the girl he didn’t dream could love him back…
Laury Dahners has a way of writing the most vivid mind pictures. Add to that an outstanding story line and characters who quickly become real to the reader and you have a book that I recommend to everyone.
I don't remember a single place where the story was slow or dry. I especially like the way the MC grows and matures throughout the book. I also like the way the author maintains the MC's basic humanity through all his challenges while keeping him honest and humble … all without being preachy. Thank you Mr. Dahners.
