Smile - is a music video about the charity surgery group Operation Smile with whom I made two trips.

This page is about the mission trips of the "TarHawks," (UNC & Kansas) a group of Orthopedic Surgeons, Orthopedic Residents, Anesthesiologists, Anesthetists, Nurses, Surgical Technicians and other volunteers who have made a number of trips to Jinotega, Nicaragua to perform charity surgeries originally under the auspices of Project Health for Leon and then starting in August 2010 under the auspices of the Dickson-Diveley Orthopaedic Foundation.

Un Esfuerzo Mas - Un Esfuezo Mas is a song about these missions. Written by our host in Jinotega, Felix Manuel Balladeres Zamora (first on the left in the picture above). It was translated and sung by Elene Dahners.

Jinotega - is a video from our first trip there.

Nic '06 - is from the trip in January of '06.

David McDaniel, John Barrington and Dan Murphy peforming a Total Knee Replacement

Three of our patients

A boy with such severe clubfeet that he wore his shoes backwards.

The knee is pointing up in this photo. It was taken in the OR prior to attempting to repair this severe clubfoot.

At the end of the procedure (there was a lot of sweatin' and cussin' involved in doing this as it was one of the hardest surgeries I've been in on), the foot is facing frontward in the cast.

At our next trip a year later, one foot is facing forward and the other still backwards, he is anxiously awating repair of the second foot

Final view of feet in 2006

Happy Kid

Preop photo of a woman whose husband cut off both of her hands with a machete. Prosthetic hands are a poor option in 3rd world countries.

Dr. Jan Leo performed Krukenberg's operation to separate the radius and ulna providing the patient with a "grasping claw."

A year later she is using the "claw" to feed herself without a prosthesis.

John Lohnes, Vicki Moore, Jenny Hooker doing a caudal block

This 26 year old woman had walked on the side of her clubbed foot for her entire life.

At the end of the procedure her foot is back on straight.

A year later she came back to show us how happy she was to walk on the bottom of her foot.
